The first section of the Red Line opened on 9 September 2009 with 10 stations operating on 15 km of route. As of February 2010, there were 11 stations open on the red line with construction work underway to extend it further northwards to Rashidiya where it will interchange with Emirates Road (E611) and Al Qusais Industrial Area (E311). The control system used for the operation of trains was supplied by Siemens Mobility who also assisted in commissioning and training operators.
