Building a successful product is no easy feat, but my journey in growing OpusClip from an idea to 5 million users in just seven months was a combination of perseverance, listening to users, and identifying the right market fit. In this post, I’ll break down how we took our company from a failed AI-powered live-streaming tool to a product with explosive growth, reaching 5 million users and nearly $10 million ARR (Annual Recurring Revenue) by the end of 2023.

Chapter 1: The Early Days of Failure
In early 2022, we set out to build an AI-powered live-streaming tool, a concept that seemed to align perfectly with the growing trend during the pandemic. Everyone was working from home, and live-streaming content was at its peak. So we thought, why not create a product that helps live streamers engage their audiences with features like AI-generated memes and AI-populated interactions?
We spent six months building the product, confident that we were creating something users would love. After three months of launching, though, we only managed to gather 200 users. Despite putting in significant effort, these users weren’t sticking around, and no one was excited about the features we’d built.
We even paid users $20 to $30 per session to use the product and give us feedback, but once the stipend stopped, so did their interest. The truth hit hard: we weren’t solving a real pain point.
Chapter 2: The Turning Point
In product development, it’s easy to fall into the trap of adding flashy features that you think are cool, but that don’t address users’ actual problems. For our AI-powered live-streaming tool, the feature that resonated the most with our small base of users was one we almost overlooked: the clipping tool.
During live streams, users wanted a way to mark moments that could be repurposed later into short clips for distribution. This simple feature turned out to be the only thing our users liked.
Here’s where the pivot happened. Instead of doubling down on the features nobody cared about, we decided to turn the clipping feature into a standalone product. We rebranded and relaunched as OpusClip—an AI-powered tool that automatically turns long-form video content into engaging short clips. And that’s when the magic started happening.
class=”wp-block-heading”>Chapter 3: Explosive Growth
In just two weeks after the launch of OpusClip, tens of thousands of users signed up. Within seven months, that number exploded to 5 million users. So how did we achieve this?
- Solving a Real Pain Point: Our live-streaming tool was fun, but it didn’t save users time or make them money—two crucial factors for user retention. Once we focused on the clipping tool, we addressed a real pain point. Creating short, engaging video clips for social media can be a time-consuming task, and our product automated over 99% of that process.
- User-Centric Development: We didn’t stop with our initial idea. We listened closely to what users wanted, adapted to their needs, and built a product around solving their problems. OpusClip allowed creators and businesses to save time on post-production and instantly generate clips from long-form videos. This was something they were willing to pay for.
- Leveraging AI to Deliver Real Value: While many AI products promise great results, not all deliver what users truly need. We focused on using AI to solve real-world problems, not just build something that looked cool. By automating the tedious, time-consuming tasks of video production, we allowed creators to focus more on being creative rather than dealing with technical hurdles.
- Rapid Iteration: One of our core strategies was to launch new features every single week. This fast-paced development cycle kept users engaged and excited about our product. As new features rolled out, users felt like they were part of something constantly evolving, which helped us build a loyal community.
- Viral Growth via User Feedback: OpusClip wasn’t just about solving individual users’ problems—it was designed to perform well on social media. Once a video created by OpusClip was posted, we could gather user feedback from metrics like views, comments, favorites, and reshares. This feedback loop helped us improve our model, making it more effective at producing viral content. In turn, this viral content helped our user base grow organically.
Chapter 4: Building a Product That Sells Itself
One of the most significant signs of product-market fit is when users start knocking on your door, asking to pay for your product. Initially, we hadn’t even set up payments, but as users started pouring in, many were eager to pay for features like jumping the queue, higher resolution downloads, more credits, and additional downloads. This was when we knew we had a winning product.
The key here was that OpusClip saved users time and made their work easier. If your product doesn’t do that, users might think it’s cool, but they won’t stick around, and they definitely won’t pay for it. However, if you can prove your product’s value in tangible terms—whether it’s saving time, increasing productivity, or driving revenue—users will be willing to invest in it.
class=”wp-block-heading”>Chapter 5: Lessons Learned
The journey to gaining 5 million users in just seven months taught me several invaluable lessons:
- Listen to your users: It’s tempting to build products based on your vision, but the real magic happens when you listen to your users and adapt to their needs.
- Solve real problems: A product that doesn’t address a tangible pain point won’t stick, no matter how cool it is.
- Pivot quickly: Don’t be afraid to pivot when something isn’t working. We abandoned our original live-streaming tool idea and focused on the clipping feature that resonated with users, which turned out to be the best decision.
- Iterate rapidly: In the fast-paced world of tech, speed matters. Launching new features regularly keeps users engaged and ensures you stay ahead of the competition.
- Leverage AI, but don’t over-rely on it: AI is a powerful tool, but it needs to be grounded in solving practical problems. Don’t focus on the technology for its own sake—focus on how it can improve users’ lives.
Chapter 6: The Future of OpusClip and AI in Content Creation
As we look to the future, OpusClip’s vision is to democratize content creation, enabling anyone to become a creator without the burden of editing and technical expertise. We want to eliminate the boring and tedious parts of video production so creators can focus on their ideas and creativity.
The era of AI isn’t just about automating tasks—it’s about allowing people to be more human by taking over the mundane aspects of work and freeing up time for creativity. As we continue to innovate and release new features, our goal remains the same: to empower creators worldwide with the tools they need to tell their stories, without the hassle.
In conclusion, building a product that reaches millions of users requires understanding their needs, pivoting when necessary, and continuously improving. OpusClip is a testament to the power of staying agile and user-focused, and I’m excited for what’s next in this journey.
